North Carolina Septic Inspector Exam 2 Practice Test

In an inspection, what is the importance of noting the presence of filter screens on the outlet?

It helps evaluate the soil type.

It determines the color of discharge.

It tracks the date of installation.

It helps evaluate effluent quality and potential clogging or maintenance needs of the drainfield.

Noting the presence of a filter screen on the outlet is important because it directly informs how well the system is controlling solids before effluent reaches the drainfield. The outlet screen traps solids in the tank effluent, so its existence and condition tell you whether solids are being filtered effectively. If the screen is missing, damaged, or clogged, solids can pass into the drainfield or accumulate at the outlet, increasing the risk of clogging and reducing the drainfield’s capacity. This helps you assess effluent quality and identify maintenance needs, such as cleaning or replacing the screen, scheduling pumping, or evaluating whether the drainfield may be at risk of failure. It’s not used to determine soil type, color of discharge, or installation date.
